Continuum of Risk
Although a majority of the population does not have established coronary artery disease (CAD), CAD is the leading cause of death among Americans. Since the 1960s, there has been a downward trend in coronary artery disease coinciding with national efforts to reduce the risk factors for CAD. This stresses the importance of Primary Prevention (modifying risk factors) to prevent a first heart attack. In patients who have already suffered a heart attack or have known blockages of the coronary artery, we practice Secondary Prevention in order to prevent a subsequent heart attack.
