Non-Traditional Risk Factors for Coronary Artery Disease

Homocysteine

  •  Increased in 20-30% of patients with coronary artery disease
  •  No evidence yet that lowering levels decreases cardiovascular risk
  •  Treatment consists of folic acid (1-5mg) and standard multivitamins

Small dense LDL

  •  Associated with diabetes, low HDL, and elevated triglyceride
  •  Treatment consists of low fat diet, exercise, fibrates, and niacin

Lipoprotein (a)

  •  Found in one-third of patients with coronary heart disease
  •  Highly determined by genetics
  •  Minimally modifiable

C Reactive Protein

  •  There appears to be an association with coronary heart disease, though a causative role has not yet been proven.
